I'd go 2.2, or 2.0. I tend not to trust stroker kits.

Same here, stroker engines require a lot of machine work and tend to run hotter than stock engines. If it's going to be a DD I'd stay with a stock bottom end.

The machine work is done; the engine is already built ready to be installed.

However, point taken.

So far I've found used 2.2L engines, complete, no warrenty, for around $2700 shipped.

Also a new factory 2.0L short block complete from the oil pan to the top of the block including timing chain with a 12 month / 12K warrenty for $2700 plus install. It was suggested that I do the waterpump, tensioner, and do a valve job on the head at the same time. What do you think?

The 2.4L stroker is $5k. I don't know if that is installed (probably not) or what warrenty they'd give me on it. Maybe 90 days.

Another possibility is Michael Long has a friend with an S that had "an issue". He is looking to sell it complete and then I'd have to take what I want and part out the rest.

Apparently the engine is just fine. Also a Vortech supercharger kit, rollbar, hard top, coilovers, newly rebuilt gearbox, new wheels and tires (and I REALLY need new tires!), custom header and exhaust and more.

I have no idea what he wants for it. I also have no idea where I'd put it; there is no room in my garage (some of you have seen it and know). So unless the price is right and I can also find someplace for it I'll have to choose one of the other options.

Seriously, does anyone have garage space available? I could probably pay a small rental fee. Heck, if you've got an S2000 and want some of these bits we can probably work a deal so we both benefit! If I can't find space this is a no-go even if the price is right.

Bill, if you get that car I could store it for a month, then i need to refocus my garage on building the LeMons car, but that may give you some time to pull parts off it or find a more long term storage solution.

Not at all close to you though, so not real convenient. It would be free though and I could pull some of the parts you want/need as time allows.

Thanks Dave. I'll factor your offer into my considerations. At this point I don't have a detailed list or price.

If it looks interesting (and affordable) would you or some other S knowlegeable person be willing go with me to look at it?

If you can find somone to buy my old crx you can store it in the barn, if not you can store it outside under a tarp. I have a 96 Impala with a stroker motor and lots of race goodies and drove as a daily driver for years without a problem. Doesn't rev quite as high. Ran high 12's low 13's for the quarter mile with full weight (4200 lbs). You should be fine with the stroker motor if that's what you want.

More for me to consider. :)

Thank you for the kind offer. If the price is right on the distressed S I'm likely to take you up on it!

Not sure I can help with selling the crx though; the people I know who might be interested are the people you know too.

chimmike wrote:f20c is a great motor, but that's one of the inherent flaws, it burns a good bit of oil.

I guess that's the price we pay for a 9,000 rpm redline :)

I'll be interested to see what you do to the car from here on out!

Apparently a little checking with the Honda community, adding some more crankcase ventilation to this engine can solve quite a bit of it's oil consumption issues. and a catch can and some welded bungs on the cam cover are cheap insurance.

and Bill, If you still can't find a Bottom end, we can rebuild and inspect. your stock components. (be honest I'd inspect whatever you bought anyway to be sure) worst case even if we have to machine the crank there are several sources of undersized bearings. or if you feel like going big There are a huge selection of internal assemblies available from 2.0-2.7 liter now an increase in displacement will create a world of tuning issues. It's not imposable or even hard to solve, but it's important to take in account, the car will need to be re-tuned to run correctly after a displacement change. adding to the bottom line.

so if your looking to do it quickly and easily staying 2 litre is the way to go.
and while rebuilding is going to be more cost effective. there is no way to tell everything that will be required without a tear down and inspection. so if you do find a known good assembly (or something built) it can help save you time and money.

And For only $200 Extra I'll turn your old block into a coffee table that can't help but stir up conversation :-)

Jeff, I appreciate the research you have done. And as you may have read above I am still looking at my options. I'm also still waiting for some overdue money, so nothing can happen for now.

I'm more than a little annoyed and frustrated, but there is nothing I can do.

At this point I'm leaning toward getting new factory bottom end or a used engine, complete. If I go the used route I have the option of going to the later 2.2L engine for better low end torque. Running it with the 2.0L ECU is possible (I've read) with the major effect being the higher rpm cutoff. So if I often ran it to the top I'd be overrevving, maybe dangerously.

However, others have done it and reported that the engine seems to be able to handle it.

Bottom line is this project is on indefinite hold until I receive money. That could happen any day, or might drag on longer with no way of knowing how long. :(

No problem, once you decide, regardless of direction the engine has to come out of the car, and the sooner we can get that done the better off you will be when you do decide. plus keeping it here you get indoor storage so you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

good Luck,

Finally have $$$ to get my car fixed. Jeff, I will be in touch to arrange when to get it to you. I think we'll start with pulling the engine and together discuss what to do from there.

Howard, can I take you up on your offer to borrow your trailer?
