Novice School March 11 - SPC

Postby Native » Thu Feb 08, 2007 9:52 pm

FAST is holding a Novice Autocrosser's school on the driver training pad at the St Petersburg College Allstate Campus! The $60 entry fee includes the world-famous FAST Lunch and more than twice the seat time of a regular autocross!

To provide quality instruction, the class size is limited to 24 students, and preregistration and prepayment by 4 March is mandatory. The event will run from 7:30am - 5pm.

Please note that drivers under age 18 will require a parent or guardian to sign the insurance waiver allowing them to compete. For insurance purposes, everyone must sign the waiver.

That's the new DST day, those of us in IT may not be able to make it :( I'll probably be working from home that day :(

I'll try to make it though :)

yeah, I saw that DST thing in the paper this morning - hopefully those who register won't all be an hour late!

Sorry to those of you who will have to work "on call," we wanted to do the school early in the season, at SPC, and the 11th was the ONLY date they had open - we'll all just have to make it work...

Did you guys contact Keith R or Bob P? They are probably the best novice-friendly instructors in the area.

Thanks but we have all the instructors lined up. Actually, what we do need is about 5 or 6 folks who are willing to just be on hand to help out, in exchange for some free seat time...

What is the format of the Novice School? Is it all seat time or will there be some group instruction on basics like walking the course, etc.?

The format of mixed group "class" instruction and individual instructor seat time worked well for the Evolution school I attended.

Early morning class while the instructors and helpers set up the course. Then some baseline runs on the course (no instruction unless absolutely necessary). Then in-car instruction and practice on four different elements of the course. End of day will be more timed runs on the full course to gauge improvement. (I think the average improvement at our last school was something like 2.5 seconds)

Due to great interest and enough instructors, we're extending registration to 32, with no decreases in planned instruction nor seat time. Spread the word...

Okay, looks like the school is a definite go, plenty of students... plenty of instructors and help. Time for this slacker event chairman to get his head into it!

Has anyone volunteered to haul the trailer yet?

Jeff is working on "classroom" training materials. I'm working on revising the on-course training elements and practice course.

Huge thanks to Steve for wrangling all of the volunteers for this event, that was a big help.

Make sure to inform the instructors what they are doing. I hate not knowing until I show up onsite, which has been the normal procedures for several at which I have instructed.

I plan to send the training materials to the instructors for review. We'll probably move the instructors through each exercise along with the students, that way the instructors will know the students and be able to work on their issues throughout the day. So, the instructors will need to know each of the drills.

Even though I'm only involved with the school as a helper peon, could you send me a copy of the instructor material too? I'd like to suck up as much knowledge as possible.

Thanks, Bill!

There are two ways to register for the school:
Online Entry
Mail Entry

Either way, it's first come, first served. Entry limit is now 32 students, and the deadline is March 4th.

Make that 2 left :D

I should have the generator all tuned up by March 11 and I was planning on dropping off the generator there Sunday anyways, so I might as well get some practice in too. 8)
