When Joe V and I changed the cooked clutch in Sara's car it measured the exact same thickness as the new clutch, but it had been over heated and would not engage.

I'm assuming the clutched was glazed or something?

Update:

They can't replicate the sound of the bearing. It has been incessantly annoying for months and now it wont do it... They replaced my clutch/brake pedal assembly and will try again today to hear the noise. I confirmed they will replace just the disk if I so choose though they suggest I do is all.... surprise. At this point I am fine with waiting until the noise is back and bringing it back to them and will have the clutch changed then as that takes care of my brake-in concerns. 170.00 for clutch, 180 for pressure plate, 16 for pilot bearing. Costs as much as an act hd clutch kit. Ill just do the clutch when the time comes. Really hoping they can hear the chirping.

That's only $366 + tax for a whole new clutch assy. INSTALLED. I would do that in a nano sec and sell the other used set on ebay or subie site.

Well, in a "coincidental" twist of fate they just so happened to get the throwout bearing done and everything put back together before I could tell them i want a new clutch. Went from "we cant replicate the sound" to "its all fixed and done" in about 5 hours. pretty damn impressive.........

I was dumb and called to ask about pricing a new clutch around 10, and at that time they didnt even believe me the bearing was making noise. 5 hours later its all fixed and put back together.... uh huh...

So, they put in a new throwout bearing? Or... did they just tell you that they did, after they couldn't replicate the noise? The world may never know.

Chirpy noises can be interesting. I'm most familiar with Miatas where a "clutch chirp" is VERY common. On that car, it's the rod from the slave cylinder. Where the end of that rod contacts the clutch release arm. It's just loose enough to move around a little bit with the engine idling and chirp when it gets a little tiny bit of rust on it. The solution is to give it a little shot of grease (or even just spray lube), and the noise goes away.

I don't know Subies, but it's possible that you might have a similar situation. Just some kind of contact point somewhere in there that will vibrate and chirp if it's not lubricated just right.

If it happens to be the one like the Miata, or similar, you'll hear it in places like drive-throughs where there's a wall next to the car to reflect the noise, and your window is open so you can hear it. And if you just TOUCH the clutch pedal (taking up any slack that was in it), the noise stops.

It's not unlike a noisy throwout bearing... but, usually a throwout bearing will be quiet until you touch the pedal, apply friction to it and make it start spinning. In its static condition, it's not spinning, so should be quiet.

Intermittent problems suck.

Probably why they couldn't replicate it, too. In the shop with lots of other noises rather than in a confined space with the acoustics just right.

Good news is that it probably wasn't the throwout bearing. And if you hear it again, just look for friction points and go after it with some spray lube!

Man did they jack up my car. whole damn thing vibrates and rattles and the AC makes it 10 times worse. Its like in their "worlds fastest tranny drop and reassembly" they forgot to tighten.......everything. Back at dealer now.

I guess I know they at least did something, however shotty it was. This is why I usually do my own work. Hate mechanics.

Thanks Doug, much appreciated and I may take you up on that. I will bring some tire money. Still holding out hope its a simple fix and I will be up and running by then.

The Dealers all seem to make their life hell by not letting them earn any decent money bringing in paying customers or putting them all on salary. It's like a revolving door from one to the next trying to make some money for them. That loss leader cheap oil change discount will come out of the mechanic's pay if he can't find something "paying" to do to your car. Same with the service rep. I go back every 6 months for an oil change and there's usually all new people. Bad occupation to be certified in. Cars still under warrantee the guys can't make any real money off those. I go to 3 different dealers for oil changes and keep seeing the same people in other places. Not a good situation. It's gotten to be the same in the tire/repair stores too. New faces every time. That's why there's good ole Carl and Joe:)

One would think in your case they've done a dozen recalls on the bearing? Should have been a no brainer by now? Probably stuck the young service grad with yours so the other guys can make some money wrenching on my old crap:(

I keep toying with maybe one last new car then I keep hearing these stories:( Arrrg.

Well, cars still in the shop. They had me go in this morning to show them the noise/vibration. Hit the ignition and clunk clunk shake. Drove up to a stop sign with ac on and there is a low frequency vibration that reverberates through the entire car, along with a clanking/tapping sound. Dude says "wow, didnt hear that before". Yeah, didnt do it until you touched it...

Wont be at tomorrow's race unless they have some revelation, and even then, not sure I will be comfortable driving it that hard will all this stuff going on. Charles S recommended I take my car to this place/person. I think we had very different experiences there. I wont be going back EVER!

They gave me a loaner. A maxed out Crosstrek. Its pretty nice. Would be a shame if someone.... raced it...

Crosstrek is probably too tall for autocross.

Take that ride that somebody offered you. Just remember you're not supposed to beat the car owner.

Resolution.

Dealer had the car for 2 weeks trying to troubleshoot the vibration/rattle issue. They called and told me that they needed me to authorize 3 hours of labor to continue looking. Said that they found a wrench and socket in the engine compartment and suspected aftermarket work had been done and until they verify my issue is unrelated I would have to pay for labor. I came unhinged. They continued saying "there is aftermarket lighting parts" and we think there was more. They refused to admit that messed anything up. All i knew was there was no problem before they touched it. They also said they put 11 hours into diagnosing it (then admitted they didnt do anything more then listen and drive it. didnt pull anything back out to verify.

Well, they found the issue and its a first for me. There was a 12mm snap-on deep well socket wedged into the motor mount that was preventing the mount from acting as designed. It caused the vibration which caused the after market lighting to rattle along with the socket itself. I test drove it for a while and it really does seem that was the issue. They stand by the fact that it is not there socket, and i dont own snap-on (wish i did) so who knows how longs its been there or if it really was theirs.

Long story short, after 2 weeks and a very angry phone conversation I have my car back and it seems to be running well. No more rattle, no more chirp, no more vibrations, and a brand new clutch/brake pedal assembly. I just wish this realization happened Friday so I could attend the race but the tech stepped on a nail on Friday and couldn't finish the job.
