And cold for the morning group, too...might not even see 60 deg...cold tires, cold pavement, slippy-slidey….

Yeah, pretty sure the RE71Rs will be like hockey pucks. I'm halfway tempted to bring the Accord and run S5. It's got all seasons on it but they're ///ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE!!!

Experienced autocrossers don't know how to slalom? Stunning.

We could have disguised some of that outgoing slalom with Chicago boxes and other trickery. Not doing so was our Christmas gift to the course workers and setup crew.

PS: It's a really easy slalom.

After only running one event in the last 6 months I won't know how to do ANYTHING.

And I didn't notice the offset in the second half at first...that should be fun!

Question: How far do you look ahead on a slalom... or where do you look?

Probably 2+ cones ahead and/or at the end of the slalom.

Think about what matters in a slalom. For an evenly spaced (or slightly increasing) and straight (or slightly increasing offset) slalom, you can set your pace (or your rate of acceleration) and get into the groove. You should be looking PAST the cone you're approaching and thinking about setting up for the next one. Of course, you're not so much "setting up" as you are just verifying that you're not getting behind and you're still in the groove. As soon as you've set your steering to pass a cone, you're looking at next one.

The other things that matter: Are there any CHANGES in the slalom? If there are, you want to be aware of them. Is it tightening up? Is it opening up? Where is that happening, and what do I need to do to stay ahead of it? If it's opening up, I need to get harder on the gas as early as possible. If it's getting tighter, I need to lift in just the right place to survive it without getting behind.

Lastly, where does the slalom end, and does it end with a straight? (a straight being anything you can accelerate through) If it's a nice acceleration zone, you want to get on the gas EARLY, and that means you're on the gas as you pass the NEXT TO LAST slalom cone. So, in that instance... once you're in the rythm of the slalom, it might be 5 cones long... but you're spotting the end of it, so that you can be on the gas in the right place. (you could accomplish the same thing by counting as you're driving and remembering how many slalom cones there are... but, you still want to back that up with the visual)

Cliff, you're pretty darned fast. That generally means that you're going to feel like you're just barely making it through EVERYTHING on the course.

You couldn't be as fast as you are without doing things at least close to correct. If you feel like your inputs are behind in a slalom, you can try to make yourself look a little further ahead and see things before they happen, so that you turn earlier and "stay ahead". Doing so might make you feel a little more in control. Or... it might just make you faster and still feel just as chaotic! I guess either would be a good outcome.

Watch the really fast guys drive slalomy stuff. It gets pretty frantic.

Looking ahead is definitely a constant struggle.
Give me 10 runs and I will do a decent job at it on runs 9 and 10.

This would have been a great course to sign up for all day, get lunch get 5 more runs then. Once a person gets comfortable with slaloms they look forward to them. Everyone has their own way of doing them. Gritting one's teeth is popular but requires a football/boxer gummy to avoid constant dental bills.

3 weeks?? I just came out of 8 months! It's taken a couple weeks to recover...low 12V and hybrid batteries (hopefully all charged now), a clogged idle air control valve (constant P0505 codes), and misc other issues. But I'm ready (maybe)...crud cleaned off and a new set of tires. Now I just need to remember how to work this thing. And I have to unlearn my rear-drive Miata tricks...
