I mean, I could dream up some more complicated requirements, but I just don't think it's worth the effort. I'd rather just keep it simple and fun.

In fact, once all the "champions" have had the chance to sign up, if we're not at our limit, we'll probably open it up to everyone.

Okay, so we've got a date (May). I've got a co-chair (Jim). A car has been volunteered (Jeff's). The next big question is how to prepare the car.

We're not going out of our way to prepare the car because it doesn't really matter much. We'll all be driving the same car, so if it's crappy for one guy, it will be crappy for everyone else! Jeff may have new shocks on the car by May, or not. It may have a decent alignment, it may not. It will have an automatic transmission and just barely enough power to get out of its own way. Good.

Now, we do need to put tires on it, which brings with it a philosophical question. We're not gonna spend the bucks to put a good set of race tires on it, and we don't need to (see "same car" above). But, we were thinking about putting a set of cheap 14" Azenis on it. Something reasonable that would survive the abuse without complaint.

But, what if we put something a little less "good" on it? Something that might challenge the driver's ability to drive within the limit of the tires a bit more? Would still need to be something capable of surviving 80-100 runs or more, but something more like a 185 cheap "performance all-season" tire. (suddenly, Ron Rice has become a ringer!)

I can see the merit of that idea... but part of me wonders if that's going to raise the bar too high, especially for those who aren't used to driving something like a Miata.

So, what do you all think? Grippy tires or less-grippy tires? Easy to drive, or a little more challenging to drive? Bear in mind that more challenging to drive will apply to EVERYONE, as will "easy to drive"... much like autocrossing in the rain, less-grippy tires might just level the playing field and let true driving skill shine.

I'm just going to stick to driving my car.

On another note, I have two quite new 205/50-15 Falken 912s on the front of the now, and maybe permanently disabled smurf that I think could handle the load. (They have 2 events on them now and maybe a couple k of street miles with a 400 wear rating or so. They are sort of hard.) You could probably get two new Falkens for the rears and have a decent set to run for the day. Just throwing it out there.

Of course there may be a small advantage for me as I know the tires... Nah, that couldn't be.

It never even crossed my mind as part of my kind and generous offer.

I was suggesting something like Azenis so that Jeff would have some half-worn decent tires when we're done... HE is suggesting the crappy tire option! He actually suggested something like an over-inflated 155-width tire... but I wouldn't go THAT far. Even on fresh 185 all-seasons an old Miata handles pretty well.

If you think it's likely that you'll let them total out the car, you should get with Jeff promptly and swap wheels with him. He has stock 14's and has been bitching about the poor selection of 14" tires.

He could also help you strip the car of things like your roll bar... maybe swap your new shocks for some old ones... stuff like that.

I think a 912 would be a decent tire for this, really. They're not race-tire grippy, but they're a decent street tire.

That was sort of my thought. I should know what they are going to do in the next day or two. I would hope by the end of the week at the latest.
