September 2011 at SPC

Postby Loren » Mon Jul 11, 2011 1:17 pm

Native wrote:We need event chairs for Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec! Who's up for it?
I've been thinking about doing another "gymkhana" style event. If nobody else pipes up for September and someone will co-chair with me, I'll do it then. "Gymkhana" was what autocross was called before it became autocross, and things were a little different back then. Cars were much slower, and courses were a lot more "involved" than they are now with elements requiring a certain level of driver memory (sort of like Jamie's July course at SPC), some tighter turns than we're used to, and possibly even the use of reverse. It's not something that we want to turn our modern sport into, it's just kind of fun to do something different from time to time.

The last time we did a gymkhana was about 4 years ago, and people either loved it or hated it. (I think most at least had fun with it, if they didn't "love" it) If you hated it, here's your opportunity. You chair September and you don't have to do a gymkhana! But, if nobody steps up soon... I'll chair and no bitching about what I decide to do!

FYI, if we do a gymkhana, it won't count as a season points event. Just for fun.

For a little history on this notion, I offer the following three forum threads:
Know Your Roots
2007 Gymkhana Pre Event
2007 Gymkhana Post Event

And here's the previous event info and course map:

I'm on board... finally an event to suit my slow car :-) don't know if I can commit to being a "co-chair" since I never know if I'll be free or booked on an autocross day. but I'll help anyway I can.

The first event of a new points season is a non-points event? hmmm...

There's 2 days in October...

Why not? :dunno: It might set the tone for the whole season. People have started taking things a bit too seriously of late, anyway.

I wouldn't want to eat up a 2-day event with the Gymkhana.

boooooo!

If I have to chair, lunch will be carrot sticks and uncooked hot dogs. I'll do it too, just to keep Loren from bringing back that nonsense!
And no cold water! I'm just bringing a hose!

But that's what a 2 day event is usually about - one fun day, one points day.

Isn't is bad for a torsen diff to change directions aggressively? I read that in an s2000 if you have to back up at the starting line, always go forward first to pre-load the diff before launching. That's my only beef with Gymkhana.

Dunno about that, never heard it before. Anything done incorrectly can be bad for a car. Dumping the clutch at 5k rpm from the starting line, crunching a shift into 2nd or 3rd gear, locking up the brakes and flat-spotting tires, etc, etc.

I get what you're saying. And if a Gymkhana scares you due to the use of reverse... you can skip it. Just like if a regular autocross scares you because you think you'll burn out your clutch, or break your axles, or scuff up your sidewalls... you could always sign up for a car show instead.

You know, that's not a bad idea. Can't see out the tiny back window to do the reverse slalom, but I have mirrors...

BTW, I reviewed the post-event thread from the last Gymkhana. The biggest complaint (besides the reverse slalom, which any real man should be able to do with their eyes closed) was justifiably having to bump a cone behind your car without knocking it over. THAT is one thing I will be changing this time. (in fact, after looking at the map, I might very well change NOTHING else) There's plenty of room behind each of those "bump" cones to make them just plain "hit" cones. The whole point was to make sure that the driver reached a certain point before changing direction. So, this time it will be "hit the cone, knock it over, drag it with you, whatever... but you MUST hit the cone". Should be a heckuva lot easier and more fun... maybe a bit less challenging.

I'm with Drew on this one.

Or with Steve. Save it for a 2 day event. Have the Gymthingy on a saturday and the points event on sunday. :) I just don't want to go 2 months without an auto-x. :bangwall:
