April 14th Brooksville Split Event

Postby Solar » Sun Apr 14, 2013 7:26 pm

What can I say, another well run and fun FAST event ! Great job by Doug and Matt doing double duty, you guys did a great job getting everything moving smoothly :notworthy: . Of course it couldn't happen without a bunch of help from "The Usual Gang of Idiots" and everyone else that worked today. :thumbwink:

I finally have my car set up to compete, and it ran really well, but unfortunately the driver isn't quite there yet. :? Really enjoyed the course, though I thought I only had one DNF but the scoring showed I had two. Looking at the video I find that the camera doesn't lie, for some reason I kept going to the outside of the second gate on the return after the slalom! :bangwall: I'm going to blame missing that gate twice on the sunglasses that John sold me, he didn't tell me that it would limit my peripheral vision. :rolling:

As far as the split part of the event goes, I think it went pretty well, everyone showed up on time and was ready to go for the most part. There was a minor issue during late registration; a couple cars had guests that weren't registered and were not allowed in. The registered drivers understood and didn't cause any fuss, but they had to leave because their guests couldn't come in.

I was a little concerned how the "shift change" was going to play out, from what I saw working registration, everything went fine and everyone that was waiting for the early event to leave was very patient. I'm hoping in the future that once we get the early and late groups more streamlined, we can squeeze out another run for a total of 6 runs. I understand this is the first time doing this and the schedule was stretched a bit to allow for any unknowns that may have popped up. Maybe we could start a little earlier in the morning ? I know that I really could have used another run since I really didn't have a full grasp of my car and course until after the 4th run. I guess I'm just spoiled ! :-D

Still, it was a fun day, and I finally had a blast driving my car for the first time in a while !

I had a great time... Nice course and a fun run. My new engine behaved itself, I actually reached the rev limiter in 2nd... Something I have never been able to do before!!! :happyblob: Then Adjusting the front swaybar to the tighter setting really helped the feel of the car.
Now I just need to calibrate the driver. :d

IMO, more is not always better, as in always having split events just so that more people can participate. There certainly are advantages to the split events like only having to invest 3/4 of a day instead of a whole day, getting home in time to clean off the cone spooge or sleeping in a little late on autox day ... I just hope we keep half of the events as full day, get at least six runs in, maybe more ... and have all competitors running at the same time so you don't have to wait until hours after you run to see how you did.

I thought everybody had a great time yesterday at the T&T. Only 12 or so cars showed up so there was lots of opportunity for runs. I think most drivers got well over 24 runs yesterday and there is not a substitute for seat time. Let's see ... $ 60/24 runs = 2.50 per run vs $ 30/5 runs = $ 12.00 Where I grew up we called that a clue!

Just my 32 cents.

FANTASTIC EVENT. And I absolutely loved the course. The outgoing sweepers where just fantastic...and I even liked the challenge of that tight little finish. Didn't really drive as tight as it seemed walking it. Looking forward to seeing how the afternoon run group went!

Had to clean off my hardrive to process the videos of the day. Some fun helmet cam action and some more under car footage. Totally forgot to try to get the camera mounted under the nose of the car. Oh well, there is always the next event, I was finally concentrating on my driving! Only down fall I see of the split events so far.....no one gets the chance to take photos.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself. The Mayor's course was a lot of fun, fast, and challenging!

Not only do Brian's sunglasses cause him to drive like butt, he looks ridiculous wearing them!

I've got video of Loren's SFTD run and more. Stay tuned.

For Brooksville, we can allow up to 20 guests in each session. Sign up, be there during the group you're not running, take pictures. For SPC, you don't even have to register, just be there.

Oh, now I understand why you sold them to me, after looking at them a little closely today, I noticed the brand name in the corner lens is "Roy Bens" ! :headscratch:

Yeah, but I need a new zoom lens to shoot again. I'll get to hang out all day again one day.

Waitin' on Ron.

I can tell you that Jay Stannard got FTD in the little Lotus. Something like 46.8. And some other dude driving a silver MX-5 with a snazzy rollbar was second to that at 47.2.

Most-with-the-least award probably goes to Kurtis who pulled a 49.xxx in a stock '97 Miata.

What? The course must have gotten faster in the afternoon after we drove off all the gravel...No? :headscratch:

As a matter of fact, on the way home, Doug and I were speculating on just how many seconds under 50 you would have done in our car.

It's just so rushed with two of us co-driving, it's impossible to schedule any rides or instructor rides. And with the new format, no off times to ride.

I feel like I'm finally getting to the point where I can actually benefit from instructor rides/drives. Previously, after someone else drives 3 or 4 seconds faster, I would just wonder, "What just happened? Can I get a replay?"

I'm not used to your car, so it's hard to say if I'd have actually been faster in it than in John's car today... but much of the course was acceleration (which is why I was really surprised that Jeremy didn't put the spank on me today), so as long as I didn't screw up, it "should" have been faster. (which would have put it in the 46-second range)

As for you and Doug being rushed from co-driving in the same class... there are a couple solutions to that. First, you could just request (in the comments on your registration, so it won't get forgotten) to run in the session opposite your co-driver. (meaning one of you would run "out of class", which really isn't a big deal) Or, you could make a day of it and one of you register for "early" and one of you register for "late", then you'd have half a day you could do ride-alongs and such if you wanted to.
