Good places to purchase helmets

Postby WAFlowers » Thu Nov 08, 2007 11:27 am

The discussion of purchasing new loaner helmets for the club got me thinking; I should probably look at getting a new one for myself.

For one thing, I'm mighty tired of using a full (closed) face helmet from my motorcycling days and want an open face helmet.

What would I need if I decided to do a track day at Sebring sometime?

Where is a good place to buy?

It varies by club...

Hey Bill,

I managed to score a matching pair of Nolan helmets on eBay a little while ago from Canada. Got an XL for me, and an M for Kim, all in one shot!

Cost was $200 + shipping, and the helmets are a 3-piece full-faced helmet, meaning the visor goes up and down, and so does the face portion, so it can be either a full-faced or open faced.

I'm sure you've seen me and kim at the events with these on.

I highly recommend them. Comfy, and convenient ;)

If you plan to do track events, it would be wise to get a current Snell SA rated helmet. Some clubs (many, actually) will allow you out on track with an M rated helmet, but as sure as that's all you own... you're gonna want to run with one of the clubs that requires an SA helmet.

When you go, can I co-drive your car? (I'm such a slut) I'll buy the brake pads!

Jeremy:
Thanks for the links. It appears that Loren's suggestion of a current Snell SA is the safest (as I expected).

Meaty:
I'm familiar with Nolan but they won't meat track requirements.

Loren:
Track days are more an "if" than a "when" right now, but I don't want to close off my options. However if and when I go, sure, you are more than welcome to co-drive.

So, who sells Snell 2000 or later SA helmets for a good price?

Saferacer.com usually has pretty good prices.

Looks like they have a G-Force SA2005 for $150, and closeout SA2000 for $100.

Yeah the GForce at $150 for their open face is about as cheap as you'll find.. I've found some offbrands for 130 new.

I wouldn't go with SA2000 or M2000 at this point, the Helmet would be extinct (for HPDEs anyways) in a few years...

Slightly off topic (but it was my thread, so it is allowed):

Not that I want one (it is fullface, not open), but does anyone know what helmet the Stig wears?

Oh, just found some images and it is a Simpson ... looks to be the Bandit.

(If you don't know who the Stig is, well, some say that his genitals are on upside down, and that if he could be bothered, he could crack the Da Vinci Code in 43 seconds... all we know is, he's called the Stig.)

Our insurance requirements are minimal, any "DOT" approved helmet is fine.

Some say he can drink 27 beers and still lap Sebring faster then most humans. And, can can see out of the back of his helmet.

all we know is he is not the stig... It's the stig's fat American cousin....

I wonder where they ever found someone in Florida that knows morroso?.?.

I liked black Stig better, Perry McCarthy He crashed a whole bunch more and when he kept it on the track was faster.

Now African Stig... I almost pissed my paints.

One good thing is rumor has it that the Top gear test track is going to be featured on GT5. and that PS3 owners will be able to download real time BBC feeds of the show, as not have to download them every Monday Like we do now.

Now Just don't sissy lift on the follow-through.

to stay on topic, buy a helmet from an on track vendor support those that support us.

I've asked Santa to bring me a helmet. :D

If he doesn't I'll just have to spend the $$$ myself.
