Note that none of them said they were seeking the line that would give them the shortest possible distance through the course? It's all about corner exit speed and smoothness.

The "Push Harder, Suck Less" philosophy explained:
Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

Just imagine how much faster those drivers would be if they took the shortest line too, don't give them any more help than they need Loren!

Then there's the Ron Rice method of: "How hard can this really be?" Timing and scoring always takes priority over a course walk. It took years for him to lose Cone Killer title. It takes a village to put up a course and keep it running.
