FASTiva Trans Swap - Feb 4

Postby Loren » Fri Jan 20, 2017 1:34 am

Me and Ben and Steve will be getting together at my place on February 4th to swap the transmission in the FASTiva. We haven't yet decided if we're swapping the engine or not, but it's likely that we will. Should be able to complete this in a day. We've done it before.

Start time will be right around 8am. We'll eat lunch at some point. Might cook something. Might order a pizza. Hopefully, we'll be done by 4-5pm.

If anyone wants to join us to watch/help/heckle, you're more than welcome. All I ask is that you let me know if you're coming so I know what to expect. PM me for the address. We're not in dire need of help, but it's always fun working on a "race car". 8-)

And if you've got some minor maintenance to do, I've got plenty of driveway available. Fluid changes, brakes, minor suspension work, stuff like that. We're not going to be able to help you much, but we can offer technical direction if you need it!

Loren,
I have a lift and load leveler you can borrow. We can figure out when to get it to you but it will need to be before the 4th as I will be leaving on a business trip on the 4th.

Ah, that's much more convenient. :thumbwink:

Let me know when a good time is. I'm available just about any morning. Any evening after about 7:00. I'm off Friday's. And can make time here and there on weekends. Maybe after the autocross this Satuday?

We're still on for next Saturday. So far, the list of folks looks like:
Me, Ben & Steve
Philip Petrie
Mike Dassatti
Soraya J-D
maybe Dan Estep

I'll get with Dan B sometime this week (maybe tomorrow) and pick up his engine lift. A new oil filter and new cam cover gasket are on my kitchen table, as is the trick unobtanium front engine mount that Joe fabricated for us. We're gonna wing it with used parts for everything else.

Anybody else who wants to come, speak up. I've got plenty of driveway, and plenty of street parking. I think Soroya is looking to flush her brake fluid. That's about the only other project that might be happening.

Soraya said she might be bringing some sort of chicken stew. I'll probably grab some bratwurst or something to throw on the smoker. We'll eat good. Oh, and maybe we'll fix a car or two.

I'm a strong possibly to be there. I need to do a thermostat on the NC, and I've been told those with normal to small sized hands can do one in 20 minutes.

So... I'll be looking for someone with normal to small sized hands. I can trade a substantial amount of ft-lbs of torque in return for the assistance of said normal to small hands.
Racing... because golf only requires one ball.

Ron, find the instructions on Miata.net. And bring oddball tools. 1/4" and 3/8" drive extensions, universals, etc. It can be done. I've done it.

I could possibly make that pizza... just saying, mostly to ruin things for Philip. This of course means you must have an oven.

I do have an oven. But, it's quite possible that Soraya may be using my kitchen table as an examination table for kitties at some point during the day. Planning on significant cooking might not be the best idea.

If anyone else not mentioned above is planning to attend, lemme know.

FYI, I saw a sign this evening that says there's some kind of race (probably running or bicycling) that will be creating some traffic Saturday morning in Safety Harbor. So, might be best to not try to drive down Bayshore to get here if you're coming from the South. And if you want to be sure you don't get stuck in traffic on Bayshore/Philippe Pkwy/590, you can sneak through the neighborhood entering off of 580 right next to Sun Groves. (that's about 1/4 mile West of 590) Look at a map, or follow a GPS, though. The route through the neighborhood is anything but a straight line.
