Time for tires

Postby Rawkkrawler » Tue Apr 11, 2017 7:34 pm

It's that time, 270+ runs and starting to show some smooth spots where there once was some tread. So my tires were the last run of the original Rivals, not the Rival S's. I jumped on the Tirerack website and found the 255-40/17' RE71R's with a $70 Visa rebate, perfect. Hit the PayPal button and thought I was good, until I received a call today saying they were backordered until June-ish.

So here's my question, do I get the Rival S's at a similar price? They have a $50 rebate. The Rival S 1.5's are about $175 a set more, not sure I'll go that route based on price.

Anyone know of another source outside of Tirerack that are competitively priced? And more importantly, actually stock the tires?

Mike,
I bought original NOS Rival S that were 3 years old from Tire Rack for 1/2 price in that size. 255/40/17". They have been awesome. I thought once they got down to 4/32" after 80 runs and now 4 years old that they were starting to heat cycle out. Nope. Randy was running on 1/3 less HP over 5000 rpm because the SSV sensor wasn't working properly and opening up for the last 2 of 6 air holes and fuel injectors. So Randy is scary fast even in a an S2 Dog momentum car. Should never have given him one of my nuts so he could get extra runs. (Another story.) The RE-71R's don't last for crap but are cheaper. Consider the Nexen's. Dirt cheap and make Ron and his son look good.

So it does...
Available maybe:
http://www.1010tires.com/Tires/Bridgest ... oCqNzw_wcB
https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/ ... ridgestone

Price looks is similar after you include shipping costs with tire rack, I just don't think they offer the rebates. If you don't mind not having the pointiest stick possible the rival s is still a very good tire, and really only a few tenths slower.
Nexan, no clue, probably similar performance as the Maxxis VR-1, Hankook RS4, Falken 615k+, Dunlop ZII...etc. I do know the VR-1's wear like iron, use them for endurance racing, they rock in that regard without really giving up any time on a ROAD COURSE...they aren't going to be as fast as a RE71r, probably on par or a little faster than the original Rival.

Bottom line, if you liked how the Rivals felt, get the Rival S, but don't expect them to last 270+ runs.

In stock at Tire Rack. $481 for Nexen. Probably my next purchase if I can buy 255/40/17"in new rules..... "just because" of others in the points in a two driver "m2" car.

So i did some research, thanks Doug and Preston, and decided for the extra money I'd still like to try the RE-71R's. I had cancelled my order with Tirerack when they said they wouldn't ship until June. I figured i can wait 6 weeks so went back on and re-ordered them. Here's where it gets wierd, i get a call the next day asking if it's ok if they don't ship until 4/18?? Of course I had no issue with it. Today I get an email saying they've shipped. I'm ok with it.

The best things come to those who wait :thumbwink:
Looking forward to seeing what you think of them.

Mike...those RE71R's are faster than my reality too. Drew might not be so happy next time out?

RE71Rs won't make 270 I think but you will be amazed my the grip! Just make sure to scrub them in first, they are crap until then and even after they still need an event or 2 to get the full hoosierstone effects.

I've been poking around at tire prices and I've been surprised by Amazon and Walmart.

Not your axe but both have cheapest price on bfg sport comp 2 in my desired size...and ship for free.

Might be worth a look next time around.

I had the Sport Comp 2's on the Cobra first and really liked them overall. I think they had a 340 or 360 grip, not great but they did last a long time.

thanks for the color on the sport comps. might go for them next FAST season.

For us S5 folks, both Amazon and Walmart have them in 195 55r15 for ~$76, tempting.

Amazon also has Federal 595 EVO in same size for ~$66. Reviews are sparse but positive.

I chose the Rival S 1.5's...with the $50 off rebate.

Should arrive tomorrow.

Now if Loren can have a Sunday event again that doesn't conflict with 'life'...

Tires are the easiest improvement one can make. $175 is only a few tank fulls of fuel for that Cobra, no? Admittedly, the year old non 1.5's would have been entirely sufficient for my use...

Steve is in charge of scheduling.

But, we have plenty of events... perhaps you just have too much "life"? :dunno:
