June 17 - FAST Classic @ Dunnellon Airport
Hey, y'all, did you hear? We've got a NEW AUTOCROSS SITE!
It's not super-close, but only about an hour North of Brooksville. Should be great for people who live up that way, and a quick run up I-75 (or US-41) for Tampa area folks. It's another airstrip facility. Vintage concrete, just like Brooksville. But, most of it has been paved over with asphalt, so it will have a different feel. There's also a side access road that will give us some different starting options.
We're doing a Classic there for our first event because we want plenty of experienced people to ensure a smooth-running event. We're offering FAST members a significant discount on this one if they register before May 1st. And if you know any autocrossers who live in the Ocala/Gainesville area, be sure they know about this event!
Given the location, we will be starting this event significantly later than usual. Driver check-in is around 9:30. Plenty of time to make the trip from Tampa and even stop for coffee and a donut on the way. Mmmmm... donuts.
What is a FAST Classic, you ask? It's an autocross with half as many entries as a FAST Open, and no formal Novice instruction. We do require all entrants to have competed in at least 5 prior autocross events so that they sort of know what they're doing (or enlist an experienced sponsor). Put that all together, and you get a small, casual autocross with LOTS of runs, and we still get done by around 2:30pm.
We'll be providing lunch for all registered drivers and guests at this event, too!
We're still doing the Buddy System for less experienced competitors at Classic events. We will allow less experienced autocrossers, even first-timers, if they have a qualified FAST regular sponsor them. As the experienced buddy, you can only sponsor ONE driver, and you are responsible for them throughout the day. You will be paired with them in the same run group (they don't have to drive your car, but they can) so that you can ride with them and they can ride with you. And you may be paired with them on a work assignment. We have no formal novice training at a Classic event, so the responsibility falls to you to do a good course walk with them and show them the ropes. We hope people will continue to have fun with that!
Registration is open until June 12. Hope you can make it!
All drivers AND guests must pre-register, this is a closed site.

Interesting. I assume it's going to be in the Northwest area of the airport?
Edit: It's also interesting that the runway and the blocks that make it up are exactly the same size as Brooksville.

Yes, NW corner. It was constructed at the same time as Brooksville. You'll find that type of construction was used for a lot of the WW2 air strips. Have a look at Sebring, Buckingham, etc. All the same.

I kinda have some tread left on the current ones but the notion of a.) cording a tire at such a distance and b.) rain... complicates things.twistedwankel wrote:If you wait you will miss a great opportunity to break in your new NexenG's.dan wrote:Tires... to buy or to ride it out, this is the question.
If this was say.. the dog track, it would be a no brainer.

Interesting site. Looks secluded so no noise issues? I assume there will be at least a port-a-john?
Also interesting aviation fuel is available...woohoo. Goodbye convertor.

Last time I checked, and it has been a while, AvGas had lead in it.twistedwankel wrote:https://www.google.com/maps/@29.0527039 ... 3?hl=en-US

Yes, it's out there. We still have noise restrictions. We'd rather not go deaf.
We'll have a port-a-potty, of course. What kind of barbarians do you take us for?
Doug is saying "goodbye convertor" because that's what the lead in Avgas is going to destroy.
Did I post the course map yet?

Jason,
The Lawsons are both signed up in S2 for this event. As are you. I bet Mike would love to thrash on your WRX with you in it for a run or two. He's a quick study.
Fill up gas before you leave home:) They do sell aviation and Jet fuel on site which would work well in the Fastiva, Lotus or other pre-1970 iron sans cat.

Put my name in the hat with Ben's. Gonna need a ride for this event. Not too picky. Y'all know I like light and nimble, but I'll drive anything with wheels.
Riding shotgun with Steve on the way up, so I won't even have my truck there!

Can you take on Philip? I don't plan on a lot of runs other than kicking Mike's ass.Loren wrote:Put my name in the hat with Ben's. Gonna need a ride for this event. Not too picky. Y'all know I like light and nimble, but I'll drive anything with wheels.

I contacted Dunnellon and they actually eat "losers". Kind of sucks since I'm the "lunch guy".
