New Project/Toy: 99 Miata
So I've got myself a new project to work on. I've now joined the Miata club.
A little backstory on the car, it is my younger brother's car that he purchased a couple years ago (as it sits cosmetically) and since then I've been his "mechanic" to upgrade the brakes, radiator and a few other things.
Well a few weeks ago he rear-ended an Altima, took it to an auto body shop to get fixed and his insurance company totaled it due to it needing a new hood, bumper, drivers headlight and rad core support. So instead of letting it get scrapped, I bought it back for a whopping $700 with a rebuildable salvage title.
So my plan right now is to fix the damaged items and get it through the DMV's process of getting a salvage titled car a re-built title so that I can register it, then the fun begins. It will be a slow process, but I'll get there eventually.
Current mods:
OEM Hardtop
Harddog roll
Konig Wheels and fresh BFGoodrich Tires (I don't care for these so they will be sold)
Koyo Rad w/ fresh thermostat and Samco Hoses
Fresh Rotors, HPS Brake pads and SS brake lines
Shifter rebuild kit (to be installed)
Borla muffler (will also be sold)
To do list:
Front Bumper
Drivers Headlight
Hood
Rad core support

WAIT this minute, you got a Miata WITH hardtop for 700!! Sorry, but you robbed someone. The hardtop alone is worth 1K.

That's great!
And I agree with Philip about the hardtop.

Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

In hindsight I shouldn't have mentioned the value of the hardtop. Instead I should have offered him $350 for it...Native wrote:That's great!

LOL Believe me, I know the value of the hard top haha If it wasn't my brother it never would have happened so cheap. Worst case if I cant get the DMV to give me a re-built title, I can strip this thing down and make a few grand haha.

Read their requirements before you start any repairs, as I recall EVERYTHING has to be documented and photographed, before and after.Evil MS3 wrote:LOL Believe me, I know the value of the hard top haha If it wasn't my brother it never would have happened so cheap. That is correct. I've called and spoken to them. It's a pain but doable. Pics before damage is repaired, receipts or bills of sale for all used parts that have to note the VIN of the donor car as it can't come from a car that's still on the road.jbrannon7 wrote:Read their requirements before you start any repairs, as I recall EVERYTHING has to be documented and photographed, before and after.Evil MS3 wrote:LOL Believe me, I know the value of the hard top haha If it wasn't my brother it never would have happened so cheap. Thankfully it doesn't need much to get it fixed so we'll see.

Out of curiosity if he had simply repaired the car would it have a dirty title? Guess he might have had to pay to repair the other car tho"?' New bumper skin and some paint?
My Ex hit a Postal Vehicle and I paid USPS $900 for a new bumper and professionally replaced the rear quarter panel on my car for $1800 and State Farm was happy as a lark I didn't file a claim. No injury no issue no premium increase. Yes she got a ticket. In the eyes of the State nothing ever happened.

He probably could have but he doesn't really have the time or skill to tackle something like that. Plus, I think it was an out for him from the car regardless. He loved the Miata but he's been wanting a used small truck for a while to haul his bikes and stuff. So it was a win win for the both of us. Considering the $$ insurance paid him for the value of the car, he did just fine. Loltwistedwankel wrote:Out of curiosity if he had simply repaired the car would it have a dirty title? So what are the chances of me ever finding a supercharger kit for this thing? Would love to eventually do that one day.

Yeah, you can still get a new SC kit for a few thousand (or more). They do come up used every now and then, though. I sold one to Steve a couple years ago that came on a Miata that I bought to resell. Nobody wanted to pay the price for the car with it installed, so I sold the car stock and Steve got a great deal on a full SC kit.

That makes no sense...if you can beat Philip, you don't need an upgrade....twistedwankel wrote:When you can beat Philip in his shit house Miata you might consider an upgrade.
And I think I'm beginning to figure out his car.

I remember that car, think I even asked you about it. I seriously considered buying it but the timing was horrible. I think we were in the middle of buying a home. hahaLoren wrote:Yeah, you can still get a new SC kit for a few thousand (or more). They do come up used every now and then, though.
