FAST Gymkhana - SUNDAY, March 3
THIS IS A SUNDAY EVENT
Dang it, we haven't done an old school Gymkhana event since 2011! It's time to get silly and have some alternative fun!
What's a Gymkhana? Let's start by what it isn't. It's not a regular autocross. It's going to include some things that you'll not see in a typical autocross. Things like stops, the use of reverse, and perhaps some other silliness just for fun. If that's not your thing... you don't need to reply to this thread and tell us how much you hate the idea. We know y'all are out there, and you can simply not attend this event, we don't mind. For the rest of you who are open to different challenges and having fun... read on.
Gymkhana is the major root of the sport we now call Autocross. Where autocross places emphasis on skillfully completing a well-defined forward-moving course in the shortest time, gymkhana puts more emphasis on a wider variety of driver skills, including precise stopping and backing maneuvers as well as a bit of memorization and navigation that are not used in autocross. Historically, gymkhana events have taken many forms, and some of them get downright silly… in a fun way. With our representation of a gymkhana, we have tried to keep the course fairly close to the autocrosses that we normally run with only a few added elements. So, autocrossers should feel comfortable with this course IF they read and follow all of the rules and instructions. Good luck, and enjoy the challenge!
Just to give you an idea of the kind of things you can expect, here's a video from our last Gymkhana: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6DEkxuUDHo
There are no special entry requirements for this event. If you're a first-timer and you feel lucky... well, you've probably got about as good a shot as anybody else! Just bear in mind that this is NOT a normal autocross, and does not in any way represent a typical FAST event.
We'll be providing lunch for all registered drivers and guests at this event.
Registration is open until January 28. Go do it!
This event is at Brooksville, so pre-registration is required for ALL drivers and guests.

Here's an event one could safely and interestingly utilize all the scrap Alcoa on the runway.

Alright, y'all. I'm gonna post this map early so that you guys know what you're in for.
As promised, it's something a little different. But, it's designed to reduce the concerns that some people have about shifting between forward and reverse gears. You WILL be using reverse, but you'll have to be at a full stop for any transition. For the first one, you won't even be on the clock! (time starts after you move forward out of the timing beam) The other ones you'll have to be stopped to grab a cup off of a cone. No need to be jamming gears on the fly going from forward to reverse!
Ready? Here we go!

I'm a little confused on station 5. So does that mean we go to the green cone, and then move an object from there, to the orange cone. Kinda like my pic? See red lines.

It would appear that you're not actually confused at all.CaptainSquirts wrote:I'm a little confused on station 5. So does that mean we go to the green cone, and then move an object from there, to the orange cone. Kinda like my pic? See red lines.

This looks like a job for the Silver Slug!
That would be my 02 Mustang. Convertible, slushbox, V8.
Y'all didn't know I had 2 Mustangs, didja? One of them runs and drives and everything!
Got the Miata high up on big jackstands and started initial disassembly for Clutch removal.
I am extremely un-motivated to do this again just a year later.
Found the source of that stank from the cold rainy event. Leaking heater hose right above exhaust downpipe. Only leaked when I turned on the heater, which I had never done before that day.

<sniff> <sniff>
Can you smell that?
Smells like... a bunch of young people about to get their butts kicked.
That's right, the Gymkhana is turning into The Battle of the Ages! We've got 3 tidy age groups. We're throwing classing to the wind. This time, it's all about the driver. Can youthful sharp eyes and reflexes make up for 35+ years of driving experience?
We'll find out! Scoring will be TEAM based. Incentive to help your fellow team-members get it right!
I've been parallel parking since 1983.
