Honda Fit Engine Swap - Feb 15, 16, 17

Postby Loren » Tue Feb 12, 2019 9:11 pm

Latest project in Loren's Groj: Replacing Soraya's busted engine with a good one.

I should have the car Wednesday and the new engine on Thursday.

I have Friday off, and ample time on Saturday and Sunday. Need experienced help. Inexperienced help is welcome, too, if anybody is looking to gain experience. But, a few experienced hands will get this job done painlessly.

I'll try to keep this first post updated with what's what. PM me if you need my address. I'm in Safety Harbor, near Philippe Park.

FRIDAY - 10am-4pm
Loren
Steve Frank
Philip Petrie
Joe Brannon

Goal: Remove whatever's in the way on the car out of the way. Intake, alternator, exhaust manifold, whatever. Start prepping new engine.

SATURDAY - 8am - 4pm
Loren
Jason Souza
Jamie Sculerati
Dan Brentnall (morning)
Andrew Wong (morning)
Soraya (afternoon)
???

Goal: Get the old engine out of the car. Get the new engine fully ready to go in. If we're ahead of the game, we can go ahead and drop it in.

SUNDAY - 8am - 4pm
Loren (MIA 12:30-3)
Steve Frank (morning)
Soraya
???

Goal: Get the new engine in, button everything up, test it, and be done!

Bad news, I’m flying to Iceland Thursday and won’t be able to assist. I really hate to miss out, but this came together really quick! Take plenty of pictures, and save me some cookies.

If we end up with more help on Friday than Saturday... it's possible the engine could come out on Friday.

All the Honda guys swear it's easier to drop the engine out of the bottom of the car, even without a lift. So, we'll probably do that. Soroya's got a tall truck jack in the back of the car, and we have some tall jack stands. We can use Dan's engine lift to grab it, and lower it down instead of lift it up.

Should have the car here tonight. I'm going to give the engine bay a good cleaning Thursday, and then hit all of the visible fasteners with some penetrating oil. That should make the whole process a little easier.

Darn, the fit lost an engine huh?

Unfortunately won't be around those hours, but I love the coming together for the heart transplant. Soraya is an awesome part of the FAST group and I'm wishing you all the best. Shouldn't be too bad of a job :salute:

It's looking like we could use some hands on Saturday if anyone's available. I'll be gone for a couple hours mid-day, gotta do a driving lesson. But, if there are people here working, they can continue in my absence.

The patient has arrived.

Open up and say "aaaaaah."

Diagnosis: Severe heart murmur.

Treatment Plan: Heart transplant.

Prognosis: Return to normal activity within 4 days.

Really small hood opening on this car. Definitely will be dropping the engine from the bottom.

I'll be there Saturday afternoon - all pending when I get out of work in Lakeland. so anywhere from 3pm on up.
Sunday I'll be there all day.

All crucial parts are to arrive by Fri end of day so will bring on Saturday. I already have the rear seal so that will be dropped off with the engine on Thursday and available even before I get there.

Thank you to all that intend to be there in person or in spirit.

Engine bay is clean. Looks like it should be a joy to work on. No rust, very clean. I sprayed penetrating oil on any visible threads I could see of what we'll be removing just to ease the process a little.

New engine is here. We'll have plenty to do tomorrow! I'll be out there by 10am.
