June 15 @ Dunnellon - Killer Course!

Postby Loren » Sat Jun 15, 2019 7:11 pm

40 drivers braved the heat and dodged the potential rain for 5 runs on a very fun course of around 40-44 seconds (for most).

What else is there to say? It was a perfect day of autocross!

Thanks to all who participated and did their part to help the day go smoothly. :thumbwink:

Results are up.

:wise:

ANY day of autocross is better than ANY other day. :wise: Kind of like fishing, or smoking (your tires) ,or sitting thru an opera, or a Brahms's symphony or pushing a lawn mower very slowly with a bad back, or getting a white circle painted around your left nipple and having to listen to the insane laughter from the person who did it?

Looks like a Miata with no tread beat an EVO with some tires :thumbwink: It poured in Spring HIll and Brooksville today twice after 3pm.

Glad we missed the rain and while it was hot, it wasn't much more tolerable with the cloud cover.

Enjoyed the course, had trouble with the turn-around and setting it up right, much different from brooksville, where the setup was predictable and you can point and shoot it, whereas today's course, I didn't get it until my last run. The ending section was another part, that feels like I could have carried more speed, but wasn't sure how to judge how much speed to scrub off to transition to the finish.

Also thanks a lot to Gene for the ride and the drive in the GTI, your setup is really good and very easy to drive and the vaq diff on it works really well, no complaints about wheel spin coming out of corners that has constantly frustrated me on my mk6.

Video of my run.

I said "a Miata with no tread and an EVO with 'some' tires" Why are the outsides worn out? That is mysterious with your alleged insane negative camber going on? Maybe you love toe in? Dude you have twice the power and fatter tires, a new drive line and AWD. Whoa. All hail the Drewster in the shit Miata turbo with a tune. :whip:

So close to the 37 second club today for me :tears: Today I learned that if you want to make a car feel faster, take out the windshield. That you can feel small in a Miata if you bolt a fixed race seat to the floor. Oh and that turbos are for cheaters :rolling:

Steve was stellar.
Car was stellar.
I had super fun. Just giddy on all 5 runs.

'New wheels' with wider width and track, plus a little more spring rate helped make the car love the course.
Critical damping ??? We don't need no stinking critical damping !

So yeah, what Loren said - solid event. Very much appreciate everyone's help, and especially Gene and Shirley for dealing with an "extra-hassle" lunch. :thumbwink: (and nice driving, Gene!)

Like I said above, and have said before, each time Bill messes with his car, it gets better. It responds well to being flung around (almost a necessity to get a faster time), and when flung it's nicely controllable, to a fairly high limit anyway (the last right on my last run sure showed that - I blew what must've been a sub-40 run). cough 225s cough

The course was cool, definitely. Lots of straights, which made planning ahead for them interesting. Good times!
See everyone back there in a couple weeks. :)

It looked beautiful out there. Squirmy at the limit bit able to keep it under the control to straighten it out.

Bill, you found 15in steelies in wider widths for 5x112 bolt pattern? I could have sworn I've seen mercedes wheels in 15x8 width on craigslist a few times, but not steelies.

Went from 15x6 et47 to 15x7 et37. I believe 'new wheels' are old Passat spares.
Went from a cheepo 7/8th” thick spring rubber up front to a 1.25” thick, higher durometer spring rubber.
Went from a combo of 300# bump spring stacked on bump stop material to just the spring plus delrin packers.
More tire support, more track width, firmer rates front and back.
Critical damping ??? We don't need no stinking critical damping !
