Tire Question

Postby shakedown067 » Wed Feb 17, 2010 1:41 pm

So I got another set of wheels that are an 1" wider than my current setup. They came with tires, but they are right at the wear bars. Which would you rather run on, 245/45/17-275/40/18 (michelin runflats) with plenty of tread, or 265/40/17-295/35/18 but at the wear bars (crapyears-non runflat)? Hope to put them on at lunch tomorrow and see how they feel on the street and go from there, but right now I'm leaning towards leaving on what I know works (michelins). So what do ya'll think?

I've got a set of kumho's I'll be getting from a fellow vette owner at Sebring (March 20th). A massive set of 295/40/17 - 315/35/18 that they installed on a C5 ZO6 but never actually ran them.

As long as there isn't standing water, being at the wearbars is actually good for autocross. I'd be more concerned about the age of the tires and how hard the rubber is. If they were worn RAPIDLY down to the wearbars and aren't old, they could be great autox tires for a little while. But, if they've been on somebody's car for 20,000 street miles over the past 3 years... they're gonna suck.

Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.

Thanks Loen. I figured I'd get some good feedback from ya. Knowing the shop I got them from (RevXtreme in Sarasota), I wouldn't doubt that they weren't on there very long (the chrome on the inside of the wheels are peeling from heat from the brakes). I'll give them a road test before the weekend and see what happens. If it rains...my michelin's will most certainly stay on the car.

Well, this mornings drive to work answered my question real fast. Any decent throttle and the rears went up in smoke. Yellow_Colorz_PDT_13 Hopefully I'll have time to put on the new rubber after the 12hrs of Sebring and have them ready for March's autocross.
