OctoberFAST - A kinder, gentler Gymkhana

Postby Loren » Tue Jul 12, 2011 11:41 pm

Okay, so it looks like we have 2 days at Brooksville in October. Bill Beers said he'd co-chair with me. (words he'll live to regret, I'm sure)

Loosely, what I think we're looking at is:

Saturday - Gymkhana style course with a practice course on the back side. (during your off heat, you can go run the practice course)
Sunday - Regular points event.

And just for those who don't know what a Gymkhana is:
Know Your Roots
2007 Gymkhana Pre Event
2007 Gymkhana Post Event

And here's the previous event info and course map:
2007 Gymkhana Info/Map

The course will be difference since it's Brooksville rather than SPC. The rules will be similar, but we're going to do away with the "cone bumping" thing. Any cone that you're required to hit, you'll be free to "obliterate", which should make things much easier.

I'll just leave this here. We'll let it sleep for a couple months...

That's how I ran the last one anyway. Couldn't see the bump cones once I got within 30 feet of it because of that big stupid wing on the back of my car. "Screw it, I'm just gonna cream them and book it out of there"
I think I had like 16 seconds in penalties, but still posted a pretty good time. :rolling:

I don't quite remember, but I think that may have been the point of that exercise... unless you could see the front and back of your car and were really precise, it probably WAS quicker in the end to just knock down the cone and take the 2-second penalty!

You know, that's not a bad idea. Can't see out the tiny back window to do the reverse slalom, but I have mirrors...

BTW, I reviewed the post-event thread from the last Gymkhana. The biggest complaint (besides the reverse slalom, which any real man should be able to do with their eyes closed) was justifiably having to bump a cone behind your car without knocking it over. THAT is one thing I will be changing this time. (in fact, after looking at the map, I might very well change NOTHING else) There's plenty of room behind each of those "bump" cones to make them just plain "hit" cones. The whole point was to make sure that the driver reached a certain point before changing direction. So, this time it will be "hit the cone, knock it over, drag it with you, whatever... but you MUST hit the cone". Should be a heckuva lot easier and more fun... maybe a bit less challenging.
That would be a welcome change. All but miatas could not see the top of those cones so you had to SLOWLY back up until you heard it hit..

I just relied on the corner workers to tell me when the ball fell...still a very slow method. :derp:

I'm ready to bring the Ford out to play again!! Certainly if you do a backwards/forwards event!!

Do people with backup camera's in their minivans have a penalty?

This will all be cleared up long before October, not a discussion for this topic.

No.
